London is calling for Leeds United. They are putting the finishing touches to their preparations for Sunday’s Championship play-off final against Southampton at Wembley.
The Whites’ record in the capital? It is not for the faint-hearted.
United have lost nine of the last 10 in London, with the most recent trip seeing them crash to 4-0 defeat at Queens Park Rangers on April 26. The hammering handed Ipswich Town the initiative in the race for automatic promotion.
The Whites have played 36 matches across all competitions in the capital since December 2017. Their record reads four wins, four draws and a staggering 28 defeats. Will their luck change this weekend?
United were consigned to the play-offs after winning only one of their last six matches of the regular season. But left-back Junior Firpo is adamant they did not buckle mentally under the pressure in the run-in.
It was difficult, but for me, I think it’s more about a lot of players having played a lot of games,” he said. “Players who had played 50 games and that’s a lot, especially at the end of the season, when you need the players as fresh as possible. People were tired with knocks, with little injuries or whatever.
“So I think the most important thing that we did was recover from the physical side, because our mindset did not change – if it’s not automatic promotion, we’ll go up through the play-offs.”
When asked what victory on Sunday would mean, the former Barcelona man said: “Not so much for the players, especially for the club. It will be a really good achievement.
