An insider said the Steelers have a “good chance” of signing a surprise free agent.

Following an already busy Tuesday in the NFL, it was stated that a surprise free agent is set to hit the open market when free agency begins next week.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Dolphins are dismissing starter linebacker Jerome Baker after discussing a reworked contract but failing to reach an agreement.

Miami is apparently leaving the door open for Baker to return, but Steelers insider Mark Kaboly of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette believes Baker will be wearing black and gold in 2024.

“I would not be surprised if the Steelers sign Jerome Baker as an inside linebacker. Actually, I believe there is a good likelihood,” Kaboly stated on platform X.

Pittsburgh needs to add to its inside linebacker corps after Cole Holcomb (knee) and Kwon Alexander (Achilles) suffered season-ending injuries last season. The timing for Holcomb’s comeback is still undetermined, while Alexander will be a free agent.

The Steelers still have Elandon Roberts under contract in 2024, but it is unclear who they intend to pair him with.

That’s why reconnecting him with Baker, whom he played with in Miami for three seasons (2020-22), appears to be a no-brainer, given their previous chemistry.

Baker is still only 27 years old and is coming off a season in which he recorded 78 tackles, 1.5 sacks, two interceptions, three passes defensed, and one touchdown in 13 games.
