NFL Free Agency Rumor: Falcons to sign 49ers’ Chase Young?

The Atlanta Falcons are in need of a quality pass rusher and could acquire Chase Young, a free agent from the San Francisco 49ers.

The Atlanta Falcons are in need of pass rushers this offseason.

Calais Campbell and Bud Dupree, the team’s top two sack leaders, are both in their 30s and free agents, raising questions about whether they will return to the Falcons for the 2019 season.

That’s why CBS Sports projects the Falcons will go shopping for a defensive end in the offseason, namely Chase Young of the San Francisco 49ers. CBS Sports projects the Falcons will sign Young to a four-year, $62 million contract.

“The 49ers enjoyed one of Young’s best performances in the Super Bowl, and on paper, the ex-Washington Commanders star makes sense as a long-term fit alongside Nick Bosa, his former Ohio State teammate,” CBS Sports writes. “But they’d also get a solid compensatory draft pick if he walks, and his overall half-season performance after the trade deadline probably won’t justify the money he’ll command on an extension. Other clubs, meanwhile, figure to be more desperate for pass-rush help.”

Young is coming off a year in which he was traded by the Commanders to the 49ers just before the NFL Trade Deadline in early November. Young wasn’t quite as dominant as he was when he started in the league, but he proved to be a complementary backup to Nick Bosa and even recorded a sack in the Super Bowl.

However, the 49ers will have difficulty re-signing Young, especially since the Falcons may pay him more to be their premier pass rusher.

Atlanta needs a pass-rush solution, and Young could be the answer.
