Former Michigan Wolverine kicks longest field goal in Super Bowl history

Former Michigan kicker Jake Moody has made Super Bowl history.

The San Francisco 49ers rookie third-round pick drilled a 55-yard field goal – a Super Bowl record – in the second quarter Sunday to give the team a 3-0 lead over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Leading into Sunday, Moody said he had shaken off misses in San Francisco’s first two playoff games. The Northville native had a 48-yarder blocked in a 24-21 win over the Green Bay Packers in the Divisional Round and missed wide-right from 48 yards in the NFC championship against the Detroit Lions.

But Moody bounced back on both occasions, hitting a 52-yarder against Green Bay and hitting from 43 and 33 yards against the Lions to help the 49ers advance.

He was money on his first attempt Sunday and had yards to spare on his 55-yard make.

During the regular season, Moody, the highest-kicker selected since 2016, connected on 21 of 25 attempts, with a long of 57.

At Michigan, Moody faced many pressure moments and frequently came through for the Wolverines. He set a program record with a 59-yarder in the 2022 Fiesta Bowl loss against TCU and was 69 of 85 in his career. That includes hitting 23 of 25 attempts in 2021, when he won the Lou Groza Award as the nation’s top kicker.
