Stage 8 of Giro d’Italia 2025: Breakaway Triumphs as Van Aert Falls Short

Stage 8 of the Giro d’Italia 2025 delivered the drama and unpredictability that fans had been waiting for, as a long-anticipated successful breakaway finally materialized. The 184-kilometer route from Spoleto to L’Aquila, featuring a series of rolling hills and a punchy final climb, was tailor-made for opportunists, and the peloton knew it.
From the very first kilometers, the pace was frantic. Almost every rider with breakaway ambitions launched an attack, turning the opening phase into chaos. Among them was Wout van Aert, who showed his intent early with a strong move near the front. The Belgian superstar, eager to make a mark after a relatively quiet first week, looked poised to make the selection. However, after several failed attempts and tactical reshuffles, Van Aert missed the decisive group that ultimately slipped away.
The day’s winning move was forged by a group of eight riders, all strong rouleurs with no immediate threat to the general classification. As the gap extended beyond five minutes, it became clear that the peloton had made peace with the break’s success. The escapees worked in harmony, and in the final 15 kilometers, the attacks within the group began.
In the end, it was Frenchman Valentin Madouas (Groupama-FDJ) who claimed victory, surging clear on the final climb and holding off a late charge from Italian hopeful Lorenzo Rota. The peloton, led home by the GC teams, rolled in over four minutes behind.
Despite Van Aert’s aggressive riding, the day belonged to the breakaway artists. As the Giro heads into more mountainous terrain, stage hunters will be on high alert — and Van Aert, ever tenacious, will no doubt be back in
the mix.
