Renowned pastor and author Dr. Tony Evans has announced his decision to step down from his role as senior pastor of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship (OCBF) in Dallas, Texas, following the passing of his second wife, Carla Evans (née Crummie). This marks the second profound loss for Dr. Evans, who previously lost his first wife, Lois Evans, to biliary cancer in December 2019 after 49 years of marriage.
Dr. Evans and Carla Crummie were married in a private ceremony in December 2023, four years after Lois’s passing. Carla, a Christian therapist and “Kindness Ambassador” for The Urban Alternative, had also experienced profound loss; her husband passed away while en route to Lois’s funeral in 2019.
In a heartfelt statement to his congregation, Dr. Evans expressed deep sorrow over Carla’s death and acknowledged the emotional toll of enduring such significant losses in a relatively short period. He emphasized the importance of taking time to grieve and heal, stating, “I have come to realize that in order to serve others effectively, I must first attend to my own healing process.”
Dr. Evans also addressed the challenges of leading a congregation while navigating personal grief. He expressed gratitude for the support and understanding of his church community during this difficult time. The leadership team at OCBF has requested prayers for Dr. Evans and his family, emphasizing their commitment to supporting him through this period of mourning.
The church has not yet announced who will assume senior pastoral duties in Dr. Evans’s absence. However, the leadership team assured congregants that plans are in place to ensure the continuity of church operations and ministries. They emphasized their collective commitment to upholding the church’s mission and supporting one another during this transitional period.
Dr. Evans’s contributions to Christian ministry are widely recognized, and his teachings have impacted countless individuals worldwide. As he steps back to focus on personal healing, the broader faith community joins in offering prayers and support, honoring his dedication and the legacy of both Lois and Car
la Evans.
