Steffi Graf Named BBC Sports Personality World Sport Star of the Year 2025

Tennis legend Steffi Graf has been named the BBC Sports Personality World Sport Star of the Year 2025, recognizing her extraordinary contributions to the sport and her enduring global impact.

The prestigious award, which honors an athlete from outside the United Kingdom for their achievements and influence, celebrates Graf’s lasting legacy in tennis, decades after her retirement. The German great, widely regarded as one of the best players in history, remains the only player—male or female—to achieve the Golden Slam in 1988, winning all four Grand Slam titles and an Olympic gold medal in a single year.

Graf’s influence extends far beyond her 22 Grand Slam singles titles. Her dominance, elegance on the court, and sportsmanship continue to inspire new generations of players. Since retiring in 1999, she has remained active in charitable causes, particularly through her foundation, Children for Tomorrow, which supports children affected by war and trauma.

In a statement, Graf expressed her gratitude: “It’s an incredible honor to receive this award. Tennis has given me so much, and I’m thankful to still be part of a sport that means so much to me.”

This recognition highlights her lasting significance in the sporting world. BBC’s panel praised her achievements, calling her “a true icon whose impact transcends generations.”

Graf joins an elite list of past winners, including Usain Bolt, Roger Federer, and Serena Williams. Her legacy, both on and off the court, remains unmatched.

The award will be presented during the BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony, where Graf will be celebrated for her incredible career and contributions

to the game.
