Nick Kyrgios reacts to Jannik Sinner’s WADA settlement being harshly called ‘end of the anti-doping system’ by expert…Read More

Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has voiced strong criticism following the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) settlement with world number one Jannik Sinner, who received a three-month suspension after testing positive for the banned substance clostebol. Kyrgios described the decision as a “sad day for tennis,” expressing concerns over perceived leniency and potential favoritism in the sport’s anti-doping enforcement.

Sinner’s positive tests occurred during the Indian Wells Masters in March 2024. He attributed the presence of clostebol in his system to accidental contamination from his physiotherapist’s use of a spray containing the substance. While the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) initially accepted Sinner’s explanation and chose not to impose a suspension, WADA appealed the decision, seeking a more stringent penalty. The subsequent settlement resulted in a three-month ban, allowing Sinner to return to competition before the French Open.

Kyrgios, known for his candid commentary, took to social media to express his dismay. He highlighted the disparity between Sinner’s brief suspension and the more severe penalties often imposed on other players for similar infractions. “So WADA came out and said it would be a 1-2 year ban. Obviously Sinner’s team have done everything in their power to just go ahead and take a 3 month ban, no titles lost, no prize money lost. Guilty or not … ,” Kyrgios posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Kyrgios’s sentiments were echoed by other players, including Novak Djokovic, who called for a review of tennis’s anti-doping system. Djokovic suggested that top players might receive preferential treatment due to access to superior legal resources, potentially leading to inconsistent enforcement of anti-doping regulations. He emphasized the need for governing bodies to address these disparities to maintain the sport’s integrity.

The controversy has ignited a broader debate within the tennis community regarding the consistency and transparency of anti-doping measures. Critics argue that settlements like Sinner’s could undermine the deterrent effect of anti-doping rules, while others contend that each case should be evaluated on its individual merits. As the discussion continues, there are growing calls for a comprehensive review of the procedures and policies governing doping violations in professional

tennis.
