Carlos Alcaraz has shared what he really thinks of Joao Fonseca after the teenager lifted his maiden ATP Tour title.
Aged just 18, Fonseca is already making waves on the circuit and has shot up almost 600 spots in the rankings in a year.
The Brazilian beat Francisco Cerundolo to claim the trophy in Buenos Aires over the weekend, and Alcaraz kept a close eye on his match.
Fonseca’s Argentina Open triumph was the latest milestone in his breakthrough run. The teenager won the Next Gen ATP Finals at the end of last year.
Since then, he’s lifted the Canberra Challenger trophy, qualified for his first Grand Slam main draw at the Australian Open and beaten No. 9 seed Andrey Rublev, and now claimed his first title at ATP Tour level.
A former No. 1 in juniors, Fonseca had long been tipped as a promising prospect. So it’s no surprise that four-time Major winner Alcaraz has been following his rise and tuned into Sunday’s championship match.
“I was watching the match. I think he played a great match, his first ATP Final,” the world No. 3 said on Monday.
