James Stewart Comments on Feud Between Eli Tomac and Ricky Carmichael Over “Skill vs. Technology”

Motocross legend James “Bubba” Stewart has weighed in on the ongoing debate between Eli Tomac and Ricky Carmichael regarding the role of skill versus technology in modern motocross. The discussion, which has sparked controversy in the racing community, centers on whether advancements in bike technology have overshadowed rider ability in determining success on the track.

Stewart, known for his groundbreaking speed and innovative riding style, shared his perspective on the matter.

“You know, the technology’s always going to play a role in racing, no doubt about it,” Stewart said. “But when it comes down to it, you can have all the fancy bikes and gadgets in the world, but you need the skills to back it up. I’ve been on both sides of that. My whole career, it was about pushing the limits, whether it was with the bike or my own abilities.”

The debate reignited after Tomac suggested that modern motorcycles, with their advanced electronics and suspension, have fundamentally changed the sport. Carmichael, a five-time Supercross champion, countered by emphasizing that while technology has evolved, the essence of racing still depends on rider talent, conditioning, and mental toughness.

Stewart, who raced in an era where two-stroke bikes gave way to four-strokes, acknowledged the impact of technology but stressed that it cannot replace raw skill.

“A great bike can help you win, but it won’t make you a champion,” he continued. “You still have to train, push through adversity, and have that killer instinct. That’s something no technology can give you.”

As the motocross community continues to debate, Stewart’s balanced viewpoint serves as a reminder that while machines evolve, the heart of racing remai

ns the rider.
