In a significant setback for the motocross community, Eli Tomac, a prominent figure in the sport, has been diagnosed with a broken fibula following a crash during a qualification session at Round 5 of the Monster Energy Supercross in Tampa, Florida. Initially believed to be a minor injury, further medical evaluations revealed the severity of the fracture, necessitating an indefinite hiatus from racing.
The incident occurred when Tomac’s leg became pinned beneath a foot peg upon landing from a jump, leading to the fracture. Despite the injury, Tomac demonstrated remarkable resilience by participating in both the heat race and the main event that evening, securing valuable championship points. Reflecting on the situation, Tomac stated, “After two days of pain not improving, I got additional scans on my leg, and I do have a broken fibula. This is such a bummer as I’ve never felt better on the motorcycle in Supercross and getting a win at San Diego was great.” He further mentioned that he does not have an exact timeframe for recovery but is committed to returning as soon as possible.
Rich Simmons, the 450 Team Manager for Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing, expressed his support, saying, “We’re all really bummed for Eli. He has been riding so great and was right there in the hunt for this championship. Also, I have to say it was already impressive for him to go out and race the heat race and the main event Saturday night to score some points for the championship, but knowing what we know now, it speaks volumes about Eli’s grit and determination. We look forward to having him come back stronger.”
This injury comes at a pivotal moment in Tomac’s career, as he had been performing exceptionally well in the 2025 SuperMotocross season, securing the red plate after a victory in San Diego and extending his win streak to 11 consecutive races—a record in the sport. The motocross community now awaits further updates on Tomac’s recovery, hopeful for his return to the t
rack.
