Alexander Zverev told he ‘needs’ suspension as Novak Djokovic told he’s wrong

In a dramatic turn of events at the Australian Open, Alexander Zverev advanced to the final after Novak Djokovic retired due to injury during their semifinal clash. Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, conceded the match after losing the first set 7-6(5), citing a muscle tear that had been aggravated during his quarterfinal victory over Carlos Alcaraz.

As Djokovic exited the court, a section of the Rod Laver Arena crowd expressed their disappointment through boos. Zverev promptly addressed this reaction in his on-court interview, urging fans to show respect: “Please, friends, don’t boo Novak. He has given everything to this sport over the past 20 years. If he cannot continue a tennis match, it really means he cannot continue.”

Despite the abrupt end to their match, Djokovic extended his support to Zverev, expressing his hope that the German secures his first Grand Slam title. “I wish Sascha all the best; he deserves his first Slam. I’ll be cheering for him and hopefully he can get it here,” Djokovic stated during the post-match press conference.

Zverev, currently ranked world number two, is set to face Italian top seed Jannik Sinner in the final. This marks Zverev’s third appearance in a Grand Slam final, having previously reached the finals at the 2020 US Open and the 2024 French Open. As he prepares for the championship match, Zverev reflected on his journey: “I’m looking forward to Sunday. I feel like I’ve done the work and that I’m ready for it.”

The tennis community now watches with anticipation to see if Zverev can clinch his maiden Grand Slam title, a victory that would mark a significant milestone in his

career.
