The Australian Open has just begun and the top favorites have done their duty in the first round. Jannik Sinner – who wants to defend the title he won in 2024 – had a tough debut against Chilean Nicolas Jarry, who has very dangerous weapons on this surface and who played an excellent match for two sets.
The world No.1 won the first two sets in a tiebreak, before dominating the third set and advancing to the second round. The 23-year-old from Sesto Pusteria did not seem to be at his best in this, his first official match of the new year, but his incredible mental strength made the difference in the decisive moments.
The favorites started well
The Italian ace is dominant on this surface and it would be a huge surprise if he didn’t at least reach the semifinals with this draw. His main opponent in the title fight at Melbourne Park is expected to be Carlos Alcaraz, who defeated Alexander Shevchenko in three sets on Margaret Court Arena.
The young Spanish champion was really impressive in the first and third sets, while in the second set he had a small drop that allowed his opponent to go ahead by a break. The 4-time Grand Slam champion worked on these details with his team during the off-season and hopes to improve as the tournament continues.
