Carlos Alcaraz hopes to put on a show at the upcoming ATP Finals as he continues his hunt for more silverware for his collection.
The Spaniard will be seeded third in the draw after home hope Jannik Sinner and recently crowned Paris Masters champion Alexander Zverev. Alcaraz is the current French Open and Wimbledon champion and has claimed 16 ATP titles so far in his career at the age of 21. He is the youngest year-end No.1 in PIF ATP rankings history.
Alcaraz has been a nemesis for Sinner this season after beating the Italian in all three of their meetings. However, the duo have been drawn in opposite groups at the ATP Finals so they might only clash if they both make it through to the knockout stages.
“When I smile on court I show my best tennis, my best shots. I try to play solid but aggressively and need to do it perfectly if I am to lift the trophy,” Alcaraz said on Thursday. “I come here with the goal to win. I want to put this trophy next to the others and it is a good goal. I am playing against the best players in the world, so I need to play my best.”
In his group, the world No.3 will play Zverev, Casper Ruud and Andrey Rublev. He leads Ruud 4-0 in their head-to-head but is level with the other two players in their rivalries.
Following the conclusion of this year’s tournament will be the Davis Cup finals which will be a significant event for Spanish tennis. Rafael Nadal will play at the event in what will be his last professional appearance before retiring. Alcaraz is also expected to heavily feature in t
he event.
“I haven’t thought too much about that date yet. It’s hard for me to accept that Rafa Nadal is going to retire. I’m only focused on the ATP Finals; then, I don’t know how everything will be,” he told reporters.
“I don’t feel extra pressure to play the Davis Cup, or because it’s Rafa’s last tournament: I just want to get there and see how things go, I don’t want to make too many projections, we’ll see how it goes.”
Alcaraz will begin his ATP Finals campaign on Monday against Ruud.
