Grizzlies’ Zach Edey draws NSFW ‘Zach Alcindor’ take from Kevin Garnett

NBA legend Kevin Garnett has drawn attention with a bold comparison between Memphis Grizzlies rookie Zach Edey and Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. During a discussion on his show KG Certified, Garnett praised the 7’4″ Edey for his impressive preseason performances, calling him “Zach Alcindor”—a nod to Abdul-Jabbar’s former name, Lew Alcindor. Garnett highlighted Edey’s proficiency with hook shots and dominance in the post, which reminded him of the iconic center’s style.

Edey, a former Purdue standout, has impressed observers with his early showings in the NBA. In a recent preseason game against the Indiana Pacers, Edey posted 23 points, nine rebounds, and one assist in just 19 minutes off the bench. Garnett’s admiration went beyond Edey’s skills, as he noted how Edey made Indiana’s Myles Turner look ineffective during the game.

The Grizzlies appear to have found a promising addition to their lineup with Edey. His developing chemistry with star guard Ja Morant could be pivotal for Memphis, especially after Morant’s endorsement of Edey as a future Rookie of the Year contender. With Steven Adams no longer anchoring the team’s frontcourt, Edey’s size and skill could fill a key role.

Edey’s growing reputation among NBA veterans and his preseason performance have raised expectations for his rookie campaign. Garnett’s colorful, albeit NSFW, remarks have only further fueled excitement around the potential impact Edey could have on the Grizzlies this season.
