Carrigan shuts down captaincy talk under new Broncos coach

Pat Carrigan, one of the Brisbane Broncos’ key players, has shut down rumors linking him to the captaincy role under the team’s new head coach, Michael Maguire. Despite frequently filling in as captain when Adam Reynolds is unavailable, Carrigan has firmly backed Reynolds to continue leading the team. Carrigan emphasized that Reynolds’ leadership qualities are unmatched, citing his strong influence on the squad. “People that know him as a leader and the influence he has on the club, it’s second to none,” Carrigan said.

This comes as the Broncos face a significant transition following a disappointing 2023 season, where they finished 12th after being grand finalists the previous year. The club’s struggles led to the surprise departure of coach Kevin Walters, paving the way for Maguire’s appointment. Carrigan expressed his eagerness to work under Maguire, praising his history of success, including winning the 2014 NRL premiership with South Sydney, where he worked with Reynolds.

Carrigan, recently named the Paul Morgan Player of the Year for 2024, continues to deliver strong performances for the Broncos and has been selected for the Kangaroos’ Pacific Championships team. However, his focus remains on team improvement rather than individual accolades. He acknowledged that the Broncos need to rebuild and take accountability for their performance as they look to get back into finals contention next year under Maguire’s leadership.

This commitment to team dynamics and growth signals that Carrigan is more concerned with collective success than personal ambition, highlighting his role as a key figure in the Broncos’ future.
