Emma Raducanu: ‘I plan to do some damage next year’

Emma Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion, has expressed her determination to make a strong comeback to the tennis scene in 2024. After a prolonged injury hiatus, Raducanu is confident in her ability to return to top-level competition, despite the challenges of being away from the sport for nearly a year. “I plan to do some damage next year,” she said in a recent interview, reflecting her eagerness to prove herself again on the professional circuit.

Raducanu’s career, which skyrocketed after her historic US Open win, has been hampered by a series of injuries that required multiple surgeries. She acknowledged that getting back into match fitness will take time, but believes that she’s in a better mental state now compared to earlier in her career. Her ranking, which once peaked at No. 10 in the world, has dropped to outside the top 200, but this gives her the opportunity to compete without the pressure of defending ranking points, potentially positioning her for a fresh start.

During her time off, Raducanu explored other interests, such as painting and playing the piano, making the most of her recovery period to develop skills outside tennis. However, she’s been vocal about her eagerness to return to the court and is targeting 2024 as a critical year for her comeback.

Fans and tennis analysts alike are eager to see how Raducanu will perform next year, especially with her new approach and mindset. With no ranking points to defend and the physical hurdles behind her, 2024 could be a pivotal year in reestablishing her presence in women’s tennis.
