Eddie Howe gives Alexander Isak injury update as Anthony Gordon hint dropped

Alexander Isak was sidelined for Newcastle’s 1-1 draw at home to Man City in the Premier League.

Anthony Gordon may find himself leading the line for an extended period with Newcastle team-mate Alexander Isak potentially out of action until after the international break.

The young England winger was deployed up front against Man City on Saturday, stepping into Isak’s shoes after suffering a fractured toe. Gordon shone up top, slotting home a penalty that earned the Magpies a 1-1 draw in the Premier League.

Isak sustained the fracture on September 15 during Newcastle’s victory over Wolves and even took to the pitch at Fulham six days later after having a painkiller injection that only partially did the trick.

When quizzed if Isak made the injury worse, manager Eddie Howe – who confirmed Isak’s absence for Tuesday nights Carabao Cup clash with League Two side Wimbledon – replied: “I don’t think that would be the case.

“It was one of those situations where, if he could tolerate the pain, he would be fine. He tolerated the pain for about 80 minutes before he became aware of any feeling back in that toe.
