Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart has ridiculed Brisbane Broncos coach Kevin Walters’ assertion that his team can win the trophy this season, labeling it as nothing short of “fairy tale” thinking.
Stuart, known for his blunt honesty and no-nonsense approach, couldn’t resist taking a swipe at Walters’ bold claim during a press conference on Tuesday. “I think Kevin’s been watching too many fairy tales, or maybe he’s been reading too many children’s books,” Stuart said with a chuckle. “They’re not even close to being a top-four team, let alone winning the trophy. It’s a pretty big gap between where they are now and where they need to be.”
Stuart’s comments come after Walters declared that his team was capable of winning three crucial games and making a deep finals run, despite their current position outside the top eight. Stuart believes that Walters is “dreaming” if he thinks the Broncos can make a serious title push.
“I love Kevin’s optimism, but someone’s got to bring him back down to earth,” Stuart said. “You can’t just magic up a premiership-winning team out of thin air. It takes hard work, dedication, and a lot of talent. And right now, the Broncos are lacking in all three areas.”
Stuart also questioned Walters’ assessment of his team’s current form, pointing out that the Broncos have struggled against top-tier teams this season. “They’ve been beaten by some of the better teams in the competition, and they’ve only managed to scrape together a few wins against teams that are struggling,” Stuart said. “That’s not exactly the form of a premiership-winning team.”
