The AFLW season opener against Brisbane on Sunday saw Melbourne forward Alice O’Loughlin receive a one-match suspension for rough conduct. O’Loughlin scored two goals against the Lions in one of her best performances to date, including a brilliant third-quarter snap that has put her in the running for the Week 1 NAB AFLW Goal of the Year nomination. Her performance included six inside 50s and 19 disposals, and she received four coaches’ votes for it. The incident took place in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game and was classified as careless conduct, medium impact, and high contact. H

Midfielders Ash Riddell and Jasmine Garner have both gotten their individual campaigns off to strong starts, polling nine AFLW Champion Player of the Year Award votes apiece from North Melbourne’s Darren Crocker and Brisbane’s Craig Starcevich following Sunday’s 44-point win. Riddell was the most prolific on Sunday at Brighton Homes Arena in Springfield, racking up a game-high 31 disposals to go with 11 score involvements and a goal. Garner, a three-time winner of the AFLCA Award, finished the afternoon with 27 touches, six tackles, six clearances and a major of her own.
