Inside Information Tyler Mahle’s Contract With The Rangers

The Texas Rangers won the 2023 World Series in spectacular fashion, led by an incredible offense.

The pitching was good enough to complement the highly productive lineup, even if they couldn’t quite enjoy Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer for much of the season.

They lost Jordan Montgomery to free agency, and outside of Kirby Yates, they had been relatively quiet during the offseason.

Until Friday.

They are signing starting pitcher Tyler Mahle to a two-year deal.

“Breakdown of Tyler Mahle’s two-year, $22 million deal with the Texas Rangers, per sources: $5.5 million in 2024, $16.5 million in 2025. The deal includes $5 million in incentives and a limited no-trade clause,” MLB insider Robert Murray tweeted.

Considering Mahle’s current situation, it makes sense to make the deal backloaded: he is set to miss at least the first half of the 2024 campaign after undergoing Tommy John surgery in late May.

Bringing in Mahle doesn’t change much for the Rangers from April to July: they are still set to go with Nathan Eovaldi, Jon Gray, Andrew Heaney, Dane Dunning, and posibly Cody Bradford as their rotation members.

It’s not a bad group, but it’s also far from elite.

Now, if the Rangers’ plans come to fruition, they would have deGrom, Scherzer, and Mahle all back by July or August.

Mahle was having a fine season with the Minnesota Twins this year when he suffered the injury.

He had a 3.16 ERA in 25.2 innings, with five walks and 28 strikeouts.

He is very talented and, once healthy, should be able to slot nicely in the middle of the rotation.
