Eddie Howe has changed since Bournemouth – Newcastle United’s summer signing explains how

Newcastle United moved quickly to sign Lloyd Kelly on a free transfer from Bournemouth earlier this summer

Lloyd Kelly has revealed Eddie Howe’s playing style is “more intricate” than his Bournemouth system.

While his philosophy has changed, the defender also explained how the Toon boss’ core beliefs remain the same. Howe arrived at St James’ Park in November 2021 when the club – recently liberated from Mike Ashley – were hurtling towards relegation.

Toon chiefs were immediately stunned by Howe’s intense work ethic on the training ground. From 6am starts to players like Jonjo Shelvey admitting he needed early nights, the Magpies appointed a relentless operator to save the day.

Howe remains as enthused as ever to move Newcastle forward almost three years down the line. Transfer funds are tight due to FFP/PSR restrictions but the 46-year-old is backed to squeeze every ounce of talent from his squad.

Kelly reunited with Howe in July when he joined United on a free transfer earlier this summer. It was the Newcastle manager who brought him to Bournemouth five years ago but injury robbed the duo a chance to work together consistently.
