Newcastle have been slow to get going in the transfer market this month but are aiming to up Amadou Onana.
Newcastle have watched from the sidelines during the January transfer window as the likes of Tottenham and West Ham have done business. The Magpies are yet to sanction any signings or departures, despite struggling to reach the heights of the last campaign.
Newcastle finished in the Premier League top four last season to secure their place in this season’s Champions League. But their extra games in Europe have taken their toll on the squad, with manager Eddie Howe having to deal with an injury crisis for a large proportion of the campaign.
January is the optimum time for Newcastle to assess their squad and bring in reinforcements in the areas they need to bolster. But the north east giants have been keeping an eye on Financial Fair Play regulations to ensure they stay within the rules. And that means transfer chiefs could be hampered unless they offload some of their stars.

Onana signs
According to The Telegraph, Newcastle think Everton ace Amadou Onana is a good option to boost their midfield as their recruitment team believe the Belgium international has the attributes and profile needed to improve the squad at St James’ Park.
Onana has excelled for Everton since joining the club from Lille in the summer of 2022 and has made 58 appearances for the Toffees. His £50million price tag is currently proving to be a problem for Howe’s team – but with Everton under pressure to sell players due to their recent Financial Fair Play issues, Newcastle will be hoping to agree a deal with their Premier League rivals.
Harrison joins
Newcastle are closing in on a deal to sign Alfie Harrison from Manchester City, according to the Daily Mail. The 18-year-old midfielder is yet to make an appearance for the Citizens first team but has impressed during his time in the club’s academy. And if Newcastle and City agree a deal, the teenager will have a medical at St James’ Park in the coming days.
