2024 MotoGP finally replies Bagnaia over led-protests on Valencia Moto GP race final decision

In a significant decision, MotoGP announced on Friday that the highly anticipated season-ending race scheduled for two weeks in Valencia has been canceled due to the catastrophic flooding that has claimed over 200 lives in the region. The championship, in collaboration with local authorities, determined that prioritizing recovery efforts was essential, and no resources should be diverted to facilitate the race.

A statement from MotoGP emphasized the importance of supporting the affected communities. “After carefully weighing the potential positive impact of racing in Valencia against the need to prioritize recovery efforts, we have decided to cancel the 2024 Valencia GP,” it read. The organization pledged to contribute to existing relief funds, ensuring their support aligns with the needs of those impacted by the disaster.

The decision followed initial considerations to postpone the event by a week. However, mounting pressure from riders, notably double MotoGP world champion Francesco Bagnaia, influenced the ultimate choice

to abandon the Valencia race entirely. Bagnaia publicly declared that he would not participate in the event, even if it meant jeopardizing his championship aspirations, as he trails leader Jorge Martin by 17 points.

“I don’t think it’s right to hold the race in Valencia,” Bagnaia stated at the Sepang circuit, where he topped the practice sessions. “On an ethical level, given what is happening, racing there is not the right thing. I hope they consider this.”

MotoGP organizers have committed to finding a new venue for the final race of the season, with details to be announced shortly. Relief efforts are set to begin during the Malaysian GP this weekend and will continue through the rescheduled finale, reflecting the championship’s dedication to positively impacting the communities they engage with.

This decision highlights the sport’s sensitivity to global crises and the ethical considerations that come into play, reinforcing the notion that compassion and community support take precedence over competition.
