£10m Premier League transfer casts doubt over Newcastle United move as personal terms agreed

Burnley appear less likely to part ways with James Trafford this summer after selling Arijanet Muric to Premier League newcomers Ipswich Town.

The Kosovo international was the Clarets’ first choice goalkeeper when they won the Championship title in 2022-23. However, the arrival of Trafford from Manchester City saw Muric drop to second choice before coming back into the starting XI for the remaining 10 games of last season.

Burnley suffered relegation but Muric will get another chance in England’s top tier after penning a four-year contract following a transfer worth a reported £10million.

“I’m excited to have joined the Club and am looking forward to getting started,” said Muric.“I watched how the team played last season and feel the style will suit me very well, so this is the perfect move for me.

“I have had good conversations with the Manager and Rene (Gilmartin, Head of Goalkeeping) and believe this is the right place for me to be as the Club moves into the Premier League. I’m looking forward to getting started.”

Muric’s departure leaves Trafford as Burnley’s only senior goalkeeper. Newcastle were understood to have verbally agreed personal terms with the 21-year-old last month whilst the two clubs discussed a fee, however circumstances have changed. In the last month, the Magpies have signed two goalkeepers.

Odysseas Vlachodimos arrived for undisclosed fee from Nottingham Forest with Elliot Anderson heading in the other direction, two separate deals that helped alleviate both clubs’ Premier League Profitability and Sustainability (PSR) fears.

Meanwhile, former Norwich City and Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper John Ruddy has penned a one-year contract following his release from Birmingham City.

Newcastle currently have five senior goalkeepers on their books with Nick Pope as No.1 and Mark Gillespie as fourth choice. Martin Dubravka is expected to leave but won’t be joining Celtic after they decided to pursue a deal for Kasper Schmeichel instead.
